Exploring textile printing by Class 2 at Ashton Keynes C of E Primary School
Icons of London |
In class 2, the children have been learning all about different printing techniques including monoprinting and relief printing. They have used a variety of materials including art foam, polystyrene sheets, string and cardboard to produce designs to print.
Before moving on to applying our printing skills to textiles, the children explored some of the work
of local artist, Kathryn Gray looking at her designs and how these had been transformed into a variety
of textiles.
As we were learning about London in geography, we decided to link our printing to London and
famous symbols / landmarks of London. We looked at examples of London themed textiles including
those of Cath Kidston to take inspiration from. The children created designs in their art books and then
practised cutting these out using paper. If the design was too intricate and they were finding it difficult
to cut out, they revised their designs. Children chose iconic London landmarks including TowerBridge,
tube signs, the Houses of Parliament and other very British objects like telephone boxes, bowler hats,
umbrellas, taxis, and teapots! We chose a limited palette of red, white, and black and printed on grey
fabric.
The children are very proud of their finished designs and will be thrilled that people are able to admire
their artwork in the Telephone Gallery.
This
is what they said:
George
"it's fun printing"
Raffy
"my favourite was the string printing"
Ben
"when it's on fabric you need to press firmly or it'll smudge"
Eva
" I learnt you needed to press down firmly with your palm”
