The month-long exhibition "A Year in the Life of Ashton
Keynes WI" at the Telephone Gallery in Ashton Keynes celebrates WI Day on
September 16th, highlighting the fun and friendship they all share. Their goal was
to display their activities, and they thought it would be entertaining to present
Calendar Girls-style photographs that depict the diversity of the group's events and
activities. The exhibition features numerous amusing photos of members with
bare shoulders, playfully posed behind sunflowers, jars of jam, cupcake mosaics,
cakes, maps, books, and more.
Ashton Keynes WI have also yarn-bombed the railings
across from the iconic red telephone box that has been transformed into a
community gallery. Knitted and crocheted letters spelling out "KEEP CALM
AND CARRY YARN - JOIN THE WI" stretch between the railings, and the posts
are adorned with floral pompoms, matching the ones decorating the exterior of
the Telephone Gallery. Additionally, they have hung bunting in WI colours on one
of the bridge's railings and displayed printed bunting created by the Beavers
during a fabric printmaking activity led by Kathryn Gray, a WI member and
community artist.
Ashton Keynes is the first village on the Thames and many walkers on the Thames Path National Trail often make a detour to the Village Shop and then visit the gallery next door, making it a popular attraction among tourists and the local community. If you're ever in Ashton Keynes, be sure to stop by The Telephone Gallery as with the exhibitions changing monthly, so there's always something new to see and this month’s exhibition is definitely not to be missed!
